Cardinals place 3B Freese on DL

The move, which is retroactive to June 28, is due to a bone bruise in Freese's right ankle which has been bothering him since earlier in the month.

On the season, he has played in 70 games and is batting .296 with four homers and 36 RBI.

To take his spot on the roster, the team recalled reliever Fernando Salas from Triple-A Memphis. It's his third stint with the Cardinals this season and over 4 1/3 innings he has yet to allow a run.
